Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the right to contest specific calls made by the chair umpire, following the practice currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
