Whenever a major prize-giving event approaches, you'll find a demand for the addition additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and delight the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely during that awards season
- Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
- Just some puzzle games scraped into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
