Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People using these treatments should be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Experts propose the way of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Users who have come off the jabs describe a powerful return of appetite.

"It felt as if something flipping and you become starving," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle management.
