At least 13 people lose their lives and 98 injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was a hallmark of his government's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in national works. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party urged an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested pending a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
